Bringing Home to Me - Christmas Dinner

Typically, I would be spending Christmas Eve having a dinner gathering at my grandmother's house, and then Christmas day either at my mom's house or my Nana's house. Playing with my nieces and nephews, and visiting as many houses as I can over the course of 2 days to visit friends and collect to go plates. I have had some great memories over the years. Seeing that it was going to cost a million dollars to try to fly home for Christmas, we decided to stay in Idaho for the holidays. Of course it makes me a little sad not being able to go home and enjoy my loved ones, so I had to bring home to Idaho.

I decided I wanted to host Christmas dinner at our house, so I invited over a few other friends who were from out of town, and did not have their family close to spend the holidays with. I helped clean, decorated, created some games, and put together small party favors for my guest. Then it was time to hit the pots.

This go round I was smarter than times in the past. I did almost all of my prep work on Christmas Eve, and I am SO GLAD I did! I was able to spend more time with my guests instead of in the kitchen, I wasn't as tired from cooking all day (I actually took a nap after church), and I wasn't full from tasting everything to make sure it was right by the time dinner was ready.  My grandmother is famous for her sweet potato cake, and I FINALLY made one by myself for the first time. It still wasn't hers, but it was good. Once everyone had a plate in their hand, it got a little quiet, but everyone knows that's a good sign. We played games and laughed for hours. Overall, I had such a great day yesterday. Check out what was on my dinner menu!

Ham
Fried Chicken
Yams
Collard Greens
Mac & Cheese (compliments of Bri)
Stuffing
Cornbread
Sweet Potato Cake
Pecan Pie
Strawberry Bowl Cake
Good Ol' Diabetic Southern Sweet Tea

Merry Christmas, and Happy Birthday Jesus!

  2. Looks like you had a yummy Christmas, Lauren! All the food looks so delicious!! My Christmas dinner was super non-traditional, as I made lasagna. Everybody in my house was craving it, so I thought, why not? We did go by mama's and get all the traditional good stuff though!

You were such a great host! I would love to taste some of your sweet potato cake. Sounds delicious!
